Mike Mackay has been appointed NZ Pork’s policy manager.
Mackay has 15 years’ experience in the public and private sector, working across agricultural policy development, applied science and innovation, and rural stakeholder engagement.
His expertise includes assessing the impacts of policy and regulatory proposals on agricultural businesses and rural communities in New Zealand.
Mackay has held senior roles at AgResearch, Lincoln University, DairyNZ and, most recently, at the Ministry for Primary Industries as a senior policy adviser in the policy and trade branch. He has a PhD and Master’s of Applied Science from Lincoln University.
Brent Kleiss, chief executive of NZ Pork, said that the appointment comes at a crucial time for the industry.
“Our sector is facing a number of challenges including the draft code of welfare and the National Policy Statement on highly productive land.
“With imported pork produced to lower standards inundating the country, it’s essential that we establish the right policy settings to ensure the sustainability and prosperity of New Zealand’s pig industry.”
