A heading dog sold for $10,500 by a Rakaia farmer topped this year’s Ashburton Dog Sale.

PGG Wrightson agent Greg Cook said the bitch was sold by noted dog triallist Stuart Millar from Peak Hill Station in the Rakaia Gorge.

“Anything over $10,000 is good money for a dog,” he said.

The top price huntaway was $5500 and was sold by Guy Murdoch from Argyle Station in Southland, one of six he sold.

Cook said the sale was stronger than many expected given low levels of confidence in the industry, with all but three of the 31 dogs listed selling.

Entries were back slightly on the past year but Cook said prices were slightly higher with six heading dogs selling for between $6000 and $9000.

Buyers came from throughout the country.
