Two Waikato candidates are contesting the vacancy on the board of Beef + Lamb New Zealand for the position of northern North Island director.
They are Peter Moore of Cambridge and Phil Weir of Te Pahu, near Pirongia.
Candidate profiles and voting papers will be posted to voters in that district in mid-February 2024 as part of the annual meeting voting pack.
All registered farmers elsewhere in the country will get the meeting pack from February 13, including five farmer remits and the BLNZ responses.
The director election closes, and postal and electronic voting for resolutions and remits close, on Wednesday, March 13.
The annual meeting will be in Nelson on March 19.
This year the two directors retiring by rotation are Martin Coup in the north, who did not seek re-election, and chair Kate Acland in northern South Island, who has been re-elected unopposed.
Moore is an agribusiness professional who was until recently a director of bidr for PGG Wrightson, a post he held since its inception.
“If elected I bring a lifetime passion for farming in New Zealand having grown up on a sheep and beef farm in the Waikato, but also international in market experience particularly in our largest market, China,” Moore said.
“I have established governance credentials including 10 years sitting on boards, I am a member of the Institute of Directors NZ, the Australian Institute of Directors, and RiskNZ.”
Weir and his wife Megan farm dairy-beef bulls and terminal sheep on the side of Mt Pirongia.
“We have debt. We have kids. We shift bulls. I am not a professional director. I’m proud of our Ballance Farm Environment Award, my Nuffield Scholarship and industry contributions as Farmer Council Chair,” said Weir, who writes a regular column for Farmers Weekly as part of the Eating the Elephant collective.
